Welcome to the 2007 Harley Wood Winter School

Sponsored by

York Optical

This school is an annual event consisting of a number of lectures and informal discussions for honours and post-graduate astronomy and astrophysics students. The school takes place immediately before the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Astronomical Society of Australia being held this year at Macquarie University from Sunday the 1st to Thursday the 5th of July. The 2007 Harley Wood Winter School is being held in the Hunter Valley, North of Sydney and will run from the 28th to the 30th of June.

Download the conference poster.

Theme: Ideas to Answers

The HWWS theme will focus on astronomical tools and techniques, rather than a particular topic within astronomy.

The speakers will be encouraged to discuss how they designed their experiment (observations/instrument/theoretical model) and how they analysed their results, rather than present the facts about some particular astronomical phenomenon.

Updates - 27th July, 2007

Dick Hunstead has kindly given us a copy of his presentation (powerpoint file) for those students who wished to follow up on his talk on how to survive your PhD. The documents he handed out during his presentation were (since not everyone got copies):
- How to write a PhD thesis by Joe Wolfe
- Surviving a PhD (All in the mind, ABC Radio National)
- Surviving your PhD write-up

25th July, 2007

A mysterious photo gallery has appeared on the website. Expect more updates over the next few days.

22nd June, 2007

Roland Crocker has had to pull out from speaking at the conference, but Andrew Walsh has stepped up to fill in the gap in the program.

13th June, 2007

For those who were a little worried, Potters survived the flooding of the Hunter River last weekend. Delegates are warned that there may be roadworks that delay your arrival at the conference venue, so leaving a little bit earlier than you had originally planned might be a good idea.

31st May, 2007

The full program is now available. Abstracts for all talks are being added to the website as they arrive.
