Transport
The conference organisers will not be providing any transport (although we will be happy to assist with directions and information about public transport).
For information about public transport options and connections in Sydney, please visit the Transport Infoline (or call 131500). Some specific details and additional options are included below for your convenience.
There will be a Partial Road Closure of the Balaclava Road Entry into Macquarie University from 30th June 2007 until 16th July 2007 to allow removal of the Balaclava Rd Gatehouse and renewal of road surface. One incoming lane will remain open and the closure will not affect private vehicles, motor cycles, bicycles, small service and delivery vehicles. All public transport services will continue to operate to the normal timetable.
Parking
A "Pay and Display" system ($10 per day) operates on campus, and is rigidly enforced. The ticket machines accept gold coins only, but change is available from the Security Office on Macquarie Drive. If you park illegally you will be fined, and the current fine for illegal parking on the University campus is at least $70.00. The organisers of the conference are not responsible for parking fines incurred by attendees.
If you are staying at the Travelodge or MGSM you will be able to park your car within their parking lot free for the duration of your stay.
Free parking is available nearby at the Macquarie Centre; all street parking outside the university is now metered at a cost of $13.20 per day.
Airport
Sydney Airport is located approximately 8 km outside the CBD, and about 20km from the University. It is easily accessible by car, train, and taxi, and less so by bus.
Taxi is probably the most convenient way to travel to and from the airport, particularly if there is more than one person or if you have luggage. Taxi ranks are located outside the both the international and domestic terminal buildings, and fares are about $70 to the University, and about $12 to the CBD.
Shuttle buses to the University cost about $40 per person (less for bookings of two or more people) and can be booked by contacting Hills Airport Shuttle.
The airport is also on the (green) Airport and East Hills train line. A trip from the Airport to Central Station takes about 10 minutes and costs $11. To travel to Macquarie University from the airport, one should change at Central for a train to Epping Station, which takes about 40 minutes and costs $14.20 ($9.40 for students). Buses run between Epping Station and Macquarie University (see below).
Trains
The nearest train station to Macquarie University is Epping Station, which is serviced by the (red) Northern and Newcastle & Central Coast lines. Ticket costs to city are $4.40 single / $8.80 return ($2.20 / $4.40 for students and children), and trains depart approximately every 15 minutes from platform 1.
Macquarie University is a ten minute bus ride from Epping Station (cost $1.60 for 2 sections). The bus stop is located on Pembroke St and is well signposted. Buses back to the train station depart from University Drive, and bus numbers 288, 290, 295 and 296 all travel to the train station. All but the 295 terminate at Epping station.
Trackwork is common and time consuming on weekends in Sydney, so be sure to check for it and allow extra travel time if necessary.
Buses
There are regular buses from Macquarie University to the CBD which can be boarded from Macquarie Drive outside building E3A (see map). Bus numbers 288, 290, 292 and 294 all head towards the city, and these depart regularly. The buses travel over the Harbour Bridge and drop passengers on York St at either Wynyard or Town Hall stations.
Bus fares to the city are $4.50 for a single adult fare ($2.20 for students). The bus travel time to the city is about 40 minutes, but can be up to an hour in peak times.
Private buses also service the university, these travel to St. Ives and Mona Vale, Blacktown, and Chatswood and Roseville. Other Sydney Buses destinations include Parramatta, Auburn, Chatswood and North Sydney.
