Lunch Meetings
A number of workshop/meetings have been arranged to take place during the lunch breaks, and for these lunch will be provided (either free or for a gold coin donation). These meetings will take place in the far corner of the E7B courtyard where a video projection system, table and about 50 chairs will be set-up. The area will be partially screened by poster boards for some privacy.
It is not expected that all conference delegates will attend these meetings.
Monday - SKA Discussion Session and Discussion meeting on future science operations of ASKAP and ATNF
The SKA Reference Group invites the astronomy community to an open Question and Answer session to hear about recent new developments in SKA-related R&D in Australia, including the new funding announced in the Federal Budget in May.
In 2011-2012, the Australian SKA Prototype (ASKAP - formerly known as Miranda and xNTD) will begin operations in WA. As well as being a pathfinder to the SKA, it will be a substantial observational facility, similar in size to Parkes and the ATCA. But it will operate in a mode quite unlike previous radio-telescopes, with an emphasis on large surveys. Users will not need, or be able, to visit the telescope during observations, and most processing will be done in a pipeline mode in WA. The end product to users may be a catalogue of sources, or a processed data cube, rather than intermediate data products. The aim of this meeting is to consult with the potential user community on how the telescope will be operated, how time will be assigned, and how the data products are released to its user community.
The ATNF will continue operating the existing telescopes throughout ASKAP construction and beyond, until ASKAP acquires significant scientific capabilities. It seems prudent to align, as much as practical, the methods of operating Parkes, Mopra and the ATCA to those expected of the new facility. The ATNF is developing an operating model that can be adopted over the next four years and that will readily accommodate ASKAP when it begins science operations. Since this may require substantial revisions to the way that users interact with the telescopes, ATNF is taking this opportunity to consult its user community on these changes.
Pizza lunch and soft drink provided ($2 donation requested). Please RSVP to Diana Londish if you plan to attend, to assist with catering.
Tuesday - Giant Magellan Telescope Update
Astronomy Australia will participate in the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) project's design and development phase as part of the NCRIS program, joining the ANU, which is already a partner in the project. This lunchtime session will provide an update on the GMT project and Australian participation, with talks by Penny Sackett (ANU member of the GMT Board) on the current status and future plans for GMT, and by Charles Jenkins (Deputy ELT Project Scientist) on GMT technical developments and site testing. There will also be an opportunity for a question-and-answer session with Penny, Charles, Warrick Couch (Australian ELT Project Scientist) and Matthew Colless (member of the GMT Board and the GSMT Science Working Group).
Thursday - EPOC education meeting
EPOC consists of ASA members interested and involved in education at any level, whether university, secondary, primary or public. Recently, it converted from being a committee of the ASA to a chapter. This has opened up the membership of EPOC and anyone interested is welcome to join the lunch. The main focus of discussion will be the International Year of Astronomy and possible roles for EPOC in its planning.
